Aaron Checkwood is an acclaimed photographer, artist, and journalist who grew up and is based in Oceanside, California. The former photo editor of the award-winning TransWorld SURF magazine, a position he held for five years, he also worked as a principal photographer for the magazine and traveled around the world to locations such as Mexico, Indonesia, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean shooting amazing action and lifestyle photos with some of the greatest athletes of this generation.
In 2012, Aaron created and published the acclaimed My Oceanside, a limited-edition book of images from his beloved hometown. The book release party featured a packed-house photo exhibit at the California Surf Museum in downtown Oceanside.
In addition, Aaron’s been working as a photographer and journalist for over 15 years, and his progressive sports and travel photography have been published in numerous magazines around the world. In 2013, he served as a judge for Red Bull’s illustrious Illume photography contest.
Between travel and constantly trying new photo techniques, Aaron also spends his free time practicing creative outlets such as painting, drawing, and sculpting. Checkwood graduated from San Diego State with a major in history. —John Stouffer
